My Six Cupboard Essentials

I don’t know about you, but I love posts that give me a peak into blogger’s lives, be they room tours, “what’s in my gym bag” videos or favourites lists. When Madeleine Shaw posted up her five cupboard essentials, I was intrigued to see what she had narrowed it down to and decided to share my own top-products.

Oats

I don’t think I could live without oats. The key component to my favourite breakfast, these grains also feature as smoothie thickeners and emergency flour, not to mention their presence in all the yummy granolas and mueslis out there.

Peanut Butter

Although a salted almond butter (preferably Pip & Nut’s almond and coconut butter…) is my nut butter of choice, peanut butter wins the prize as my cupboard staple thanks to it’s significantly lower price point. Buying kilogram tubs feels like a no-brainer now (a dangerous viewpoint if ever there was one!) so that I always have a good supply to hand for breakfasts, satay sauces, baking and more. Or just spooning out of the jar because, well. I also love powdered peanut butter, also known as peanut butter flour. It’s a bit more pricy but is fantastic in smoothies and shakes, and also is much lower in fat if that is something you are being mindful of.

Cacao Powder

Anyone who knows me knows of my love of chocolate. Cacao, or a good quality cocoa powder means I can turn anything into a treat at the drop of a hat! I grew up with a strict ban on coco pops and any other sweet, chocolatey breakfasts, so it does feel like having a forbidden treat to add a little cacao to my porridges or smoothies.

Bulgar Wheat and Grains

Whilst I don’t have a favourite grain particularly, I most usually rotate between bulgar wheat, quinoa and brown rice. Between the three, they fit most meal types. There’s a lot of negativity around grains due to the trend for low-carb diets, which is a shame because they’re a great source of B vitamins and fibre. Grains feature in two, if not all three of my meals every day.

Chickpeas

Just pipping black beans to the post as my favourite legume, chickpeas -dried or tinned  -are so versatile. They’re the star of hummus, taste amazing with spinach in a curry, become amazing when roasted with honey and paprika and become the fudgiest peanut butter blondies.

Tinned Tomatoes

A often overlooked, humble staple, tinned tomatoes get used by me several times a week. I’m a big fan of one pot meals and tinned tomatoes usually feature in the form of shakshuka or Moroccan-inspired tagines.
